How to Prepare for a Marine Survey

Preparing the vessel in advance can save both time and additional expense by ensuring clear access for inspection. Presenting a clean, orderly boat—and having all documentation and gear readily available—helps streamline the process. If applicable, please arrange with the marina for a haul-out to allow bottom inspection and secure a qualified captain for any required sea trials. Lockers and cabin areas should be cleared of miscellaneous items to allow unobstructed access.

Surveyors should not be expected to prepare the vessel themselves. In some cases, the surveyor may request limited removal of interior panels, headliners, flooring, or other components to access specific areas of concern. For wood vessels, selective removal and examination of below-waterline fasteners may also be required. All dismantling and reinstallation must be performed by qualified personnel and remains the responsibility of the survey client.

Written authorization from the vessel’s owner may be required for boarding or for the removal of any components.

Once engaged, the surveyor works exclusively for you—the client—and represents your interests throughout the inspection.
